Cushion-ing

I value downtime as much as the next person and lately I’ve not been getting any. Life seems far more busy than it should be.

But I don’t want to complain about it. If I am being busy, I am also equally enjoying a lot of things on the side.

One valuable thing that has happened in the past two months is that I’ve gotten closer to my parents. I wish I had done this earlier. We were always close as a family, traveled a lot, went to interesting places to eat and even were kind to each other. But never did we regularly have a heart to heart. Indian families don’t really believe in heart to hearts. They aid your life, but hardly have I seen families where you can openly speak on several emotional topics. And if you are from a family that does that, it is wonderful.

While my parents love each other and they love me from day 1 of my life, I feel like I’ve never really 'known' them or their life.

Recently I was fixing cushions on a plastic chair we got for my father during his period of stroke. While my Dad looked on, I worked with the spanner as effectively as I could. He kept reiterating that “we should just let the carpenter do it.” I kept opposing saying, “why? We just need to fit 4 screws. Let’s not waste money.”

And secretly I enjoy doing such random household work and using my spanner which I so lovingly got a couple of years ago to fix my hanging planters.

While doing this activity, I asked my father if his father was ever interested in tools. Apparently ny Grandfather was deeply into all this and regularly did the work around the house. This made me so happy. It got my Dad to speak about a childhood memory and remember his father in a loving way.

My father was also naming what kind of spanners would be easier for the job I was doing. I asked him how he knew the names if he has never lifted a spanner his whole life, he said he saw the people on his electric site/ thermal power plants use it.

This means I need to speak to our parents more. They have far more interesting stories than I could have imagined. And they are almost always wholesome. ☺

Photo of the chair after I successfully completed the work. ☺ I am a millennial. I obviously need to document everything visually as well!

Have a great week and weekend ahead!
